Transform Your Self-Talk

Updated: Oct 22, 2023

Last weekend, my kids and I had a much-needed break from the school routine, enjoying a 5-day weekend. Fall was in full swing, with cool mornings, colorful leaves, and perfectly comfortable afternoons. During our annual trip to the corn maze, we found ourselves in an unexpected conversation about self-talk – those inner conversations we have with ourselves.

My mom joined us on our adventure.

I noticed something interesting. My own self-talk tends to be on the positive side, murmuring things like “This might be challenging, but I can handle it” or “I'll give it my best shot.” In contrast, the voices in my car, belonging to my kids, expressed self-doubt and negativity: “I'm stupid,” “I can’t do it,” and “I'm dumb.”

I took some time to reflect about when my positive self-talk had become a regular thing. While I'm no stranger to worry and try to avoid confrontations, I've somehow managed to maintain a positive self-image. Psalm 139 has been my guide in understanding who God says I am. There's one verse from this Psalm that really resonates with me:

Psalm 139:23

Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts!

This verse captures my desire for an accurate self-perception, not inflated by false beliefs. I want a deep understanding of who I am in God’s eyes. As I wrote down my thoughts for this post, the song "Remind Me Who I Am" started playing, reminding me that in seeking God, I discover my identity in Him. That’s the voice I choose to listen to during moments of self-reflection.

I encourage you to take some time this week and read through Psalm 139. Ask God to reveal to you who He says you are. Hold onto His perspective and let it transform your self-talk.
