The Final Stretch of Winter: Habits for Renewal

We find ourselves with just two short months remaining in winter, a season that elicits different feelings from each of us. While my husband eagerly anticipates snowmobiling and ice fishing, I long for the warmth of summer—early morning runs and lazy afternoons by the pool or lake. As I prepare for the final stretch of winter, I realize the importance of leaning into habits that support my physical, mental and spiritual health.

Re-establishing Outdoor Habits:

Despite the challenging subzero temperatures, I initially attempted to establish the habit of being outdoors. However, the frigid weather led me to hibernate indoors. With the rising temperatures, I am determined to re-establish this outdoor routine, recognizing the benefits it brings to my physical and mental health.

Spiritual Habits:

Setting my alarm for 5 a.m. has become a sacred time for me. It allows me to enjoy a cup of coffee and dive into the Bible. Currently journeying through 2 Samuel, these early mornings provide me with the spiritual light needed to face the day ahead.

Psalm 119:105

Your word is a lamp for my feet,

a light on my path.

Praying Throughout the Day:

While I could fall into the routine of reciting the same prayers daily, the real transformation occurs when I actively communicate with God throughout the day. Alarms on my watch serve as reminders, prompting moments of connection and reflection during life's hustle.

Psalm 63:1

You, God, are my God,

earnestly I seek you;

I thirst for you,

my whole being longs for you,

in a dry and parched land

where there is no water.

Prioritizing Sleep:

The conviction hits hard when reflecting on rising early and staying up late for the wrong reasons. Juggling the demands of life, I acknowledge the need for sufficient sleep. Though challenging, prioritizing a healthy sleep routine becomes crucial in fostering overall well-being.

Psalm 127:2

In vain you rise early and stay up late,

toiling for food to eat—

for he grants sleep to those he loves.

Taking Care of Your Body:

Recognizing our bodies as temples of the Holy Spirit, I am reminded to honor God with my physical well-being. While staying motivated for workouts, especially with Grandma's Marathon on the horizon in June, is essential, it's equally vital to listen to my body's needs and practice self-care, aka rest days.

1 Corinthians 6:19-20

Do you not know that your bodies are temples

of the Holy Spirit, who is in you,

whom you have received from God?

You are not your own;

you were bought at a price.

Therefore honor God with your bodies.

As we approach the final two months of winter, let's reflect on habits that promote our well-being. Whether it involves spending more time outdoors, engaging in spiritual practices, prioritizing sleep, or taking care of our bodies, these habits can pave the way for the renewal symbolized by the onset of spring. What habits will you prioritize as we reach the end of winter?
