Stuck on a Hamster Wheel

This morning I felt like I was putting in all the effort and getting nowhere. I was a hamster spinning its wheel. I had the day off and my to-do list was long: drop the kids off at school, workout, renew my license, dishes, groceries, clean up the house, shower at some point, do some writing and pick up the kids. The first major hiccup came with renewing my license. I thought I would save myself some time by doing the preapproval at home. Okay, I felt like I was signing my life away as I ran around the house finding documentation, forgetting passwords, uploading documentation. The website said it would take me 10-15 minutes, true confessions it took me OVER AN HOUR!

My day was a little annoying but Moses had more than an annoying day. He had 40 years of wandering in the desert with people who were constantly complaining and arguing. At the end of his 40 years he was not able to go to the Promise Land on earth, even though he had put in quite the effort. The Book of Exodus gives the details of Moses' time stuck on his hamster wheel. Sometimes we spin on our wheels, put in the work and we are not to see the results.

Hebrews 11:39-40

These were all commended for their faith, yet none of them received what had been promised, since God had planned something better for us so that only together with us would they be made perfect.

There are days that I spin on my wheel and even though I feel like I’m not getting anywhere I will do the next thing. Today’s frustrations are small in the grand scheme. If you are frustrated today let your eyes look to Jesus who endured the cross so that you could be in heaven with him. Do not grow weary or lose heart. You are loved.

Hebrews 12:2-3

fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.
