Spilled Coffee: Finding God's Grace in Life's Messiness

Ninja Coffee Maker

Each week, I set aside time to pull my thoughts together for this blog, a routine that provides peace in the middle of life's demands. Today's session unfolded quite differently, courtesy of an unintentional collision of chores and caffeine.

As I prepared for my routine, I found myself multitasking, juggling the mundane tasks of making a "quick" cup of coffee and tackling the ever-persistent laundry. The coffee maker took longer than its usual routine. Oblivious to its subtle rebellion, I busied myself with the laundry, only to return to a scene of chaos: my cup overflowing, and not just metaphorically.

In my rush, I had mistakenly pressed the full pot option instead of the single cup setting, resulting in a caffeinated flood that bathed not only my cup but also the surrounding shelf.

After a quick mop up of the mess and second attempt at my caffeine fix with a fresh, appropriately sized cup, I was prompted to a passage in Psalms.

Psalm 23: 5-6

You prepare a table before me

in the presence of my enemies.

You anoint my head with oil;

my cup overflows.

Surely your goodness and love

will follow me all the days of my life,

and I will dwell in the house

of the LORD forever.

In that moment of spilled coffee and scattered laundry, my overflowing cup became a new lesson. While it may not have mirrored the traditional definition of "goodness," it served as a reminder of God’s presence in the middle of life's unexpected twists.

When faced with adversity, whether it be a minor inconvenience or a significant setback, I find comfort in the assurance that God's grace remains.

So, as I settled back into my blogging chair, I found inspiration in the middle of messiness. In the overflow of my cup, I saw not just a spill, but a narrative of the unwavering presence of God’s grace.
