School's Out, Summer's In

School is out for my kids and mostly for myself too (I teach a few days in the summer). We are all beyond excited to enjoy the freedom of summer and the sunshine after a long long long long cold Minnesota winter!

The school year is busy with the typical school day, activities and obligations but we have a routine. Summer is free with fewer have to’s and more get to’s. One of the get to’s I want to focus on this summer is getting my kid’s into a Bible routine.

1 Corinthians 13:4-7

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.

We started off our school free week reading these verses. I have 6 and 12 year old daughters, so each of us shared the part that stuck out to us. My 6 year old said, “love is patient.” My 12 year old, “keeps no record of wrongs.” I chose, “is not easily angered.”

As the week went by our key points were revisited. I reflected on anger. During the school year I give my best to the students I work with and my family gets the leftovers. What I have left at the end of a long day is quick to anger with very little patience. I asked my daughters what patience meant, the 6 year old said, “happy to wait.” I am thankful that love does not keep a “record of wrongs”. Everyone at my house needs to work on being happy to wait.

We had a little lesson on happily waiting at our favorite ice cream place. Only one person was working but we were happy to wait for our treat. I chose coffee, my kids stuck with ice cream.

What point stuck out to you in 1 Corinthians 13:4-7? Write it down and then see how that point keeps showing up in your week.
