In relationships, there often comes a moment when we're called to set aside our own preferences for the greater good of those we love. Whether it's within the marriage relationship, the challenges of parenting, or the dynamics of teamwork with co-workers, the art of selflessness can shape our connections.
This very scenario unfolded in my own house this week. While my husband and daughters are dog lovers, I find myself less inclined towards these furry friends. The incessant licking, sniffing, and seemingly ceaseless barking can work at the limits of my patience.
Yet, as I reflect on the doggy dynamics of our week, I'm reminded of the value of relationships through the eyes of Jesus. Philippians 2:1-4 speaks about selflessness and the importance of considering others’ needs:
Philippians 2:1-4
Therefore if you have any encouragement
from being united with Christ,
if any comfort from his love,
if any common sharing in the Spirit,
if any tenderness and compassion,
then make my joy complete by being like-minded,
having the same love,
being one in spirit and of one mind.
Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit.
Rather, in humility value others
above yourselves, not looking
to your own interests
but each of you
to the interests of the others.
These verses are a reminder to do away with selfish ambition and empty pride, urging us instead to walk the path of humility, considering the needs of others. It's a call to not only prioritize our own interests, but to actively seek out the well-being of those around us.
And so, with this wisdom as my guide, I find myself making a conscious choice. I choose to set aside my personal aversion to another furry friend and instead encourage the desires of my family. Meet Zeke.
With a deep breath and an open heart, I'm welcoming a new member into our family—not into our house, but into our yard. It's a small sacrifice in the grand scheme of things.
As we wade through the messy terrain of relationships, each of us encounters moments where sacrifice becomes the currency of love. Perhaps you, too, find yourself in a situation where setting aside your own preferences is necessary for the well-being of someone you care about. In those moments, look to Jesus, who lived the example of selflessness and humility in every interaction. Consider how Jesus would want you to prioritize the interests of the ones you love.
