On the Bench

A few weeks ago I was chatting with another runner about, well, running of course. She said that training is riding the line between being on verge of a personal record and being injured. This week I crossed the line and had to sit on the bench due to injury.

Two weeks ago I added a standing ab workout to the end of a run. It had quite a few single leg core moves and apparently my tired adductors (groin) did not appreciate being tested. I felt a little twinge the next day but it wasn’t interfering with running. Then the following week I was doing a variety of lunges that my adductor was not ready for. When I did my hot, humid long run last Saturday my leg tried to wave the flag of surrender. I didn't listen and pushed on because I like to finish what I start, stubborn.

Sunday I was able to rest.

Monday I had a 7 mile run scheduled. It was hard, I had to think about how to run and when I finished my leg throbbed. I finally conceded that my leg was not getting better. My coach recommended 3 days of rest. On the bench, resting my leg and going stir crazy. Mentally I was ready to run but my body screamed that it needed a break.

Instead of working out I took my kids back to school shopping and had our annual trip to Itasca State Park. My 12 year old loves to climb to the tall fire tower, my 6 year old is less than thrilled with the height. As we started to climb the tower my 6 year old refused to go on and my 12 year old trucked on, so I carried my 50 pound daughter the rest of the way to the top.

Friday I was given the go ahead to run again and was so nervous. Flashbacks to the hamstring injury that benched me last summer plagued my mind as I hit the road. My legs were heavy and I had some pain, miles 4-5 I finally felt like it was a decent run. By the end it was hard, I was ready to be done and both of my legs hurt. Remembering the climb to the top of the tower, not the best decision, my quads were on fire!

Now it's Saturday, my usual long run day, and I have decided I need more time to heal. My legs are irritated and not up for intense training. More rest and an uncertain training plan lie ahead.
