Make a Joyful Noise

Last night, I sat in the school auditorium, surrounded by parents, grandparents, and friends, waiting for the winter band and choir concert to begin. Our school recently welcomed a new choir director, a change that brought some initial apprehension—especially for my daughters. Change is rarely easy, especially when it comes to something as personal as music, where you are performing and allowing others to witness your talents.

Heading into the concert, I already had a positive impression of this new director. He’s managed to spark something in both of my daughters that goes beyond the classroom. Our house has come alive with the sounds of singing, guitar, and ukulele strumming.

What I witnessed at the concert was nothing short of uplifting. From the opening notes to the final moments, the students’ joy—and a few nerves—were unmistakable. Young soloists sang with confidence, their voices filling the room. The closing song moved beyond the stage. The students, holding candles, walked through the audience, creating an intimate moment. At times, I felt tears forming in my eyes. This wasn’t just a performance; it was joy on full display—a glimpse into the gates of heaven.

The Bible mentions making a joyful noise in Psalm 100:1-2: “Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth. Worship the Lord with gladness; come before him with joyful songs.” While this verse references singing, I believe its message extends far beyond music. Making a joyful noise can take many forms—whether it’s a kind word, laughter shared with a friend, or encouragement offered in a time of need. It’s about spreading joy and allowing it to ripple through the lives of those around us.

Last night’s concert was a perfect example of this. The choir director’s passion for music was evident in every aspect of the performance. It inspired the students to sing with joy and step out of their comfort zones. Their joyful noise wasn’t just something we heard; it was something we felt. It reminded me how powerful joy can be, how it brings people together and draws us closer to God.

As we start a new week, reflect with me on how we can make a joyful noise. Maybe it’s through music, laughter, or simply offering a word of encouragement to someone who needs it. You never know whose life you might touch. Whether it’s in the quiet of our homes, in a crowded auditorium, or anywhere in between, let’s choose joy—and let it be heard.
