Listening to the Whisper

Updated: Jun 18, 2023

I was recovering from a hamstring injury and slowly getting back into a running routine. This particular morning I was planning to run a 5 mile route, my legs felt tired, it was hot and in my head I started to reconsider, “maybe just a 4 mile today.” I hit the 2 mile mark and it was decision time, press on or turn around?

1 Kings 19:11-13

The Lord said, “Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by.” Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper. When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave. Then a voice said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”

I decided to press on. After hitting the 2 ½ mile mark I turned around and a truck pulled up beside me with 3 familiar faces, a father and two sons. You see this family has a special spot in my heart as their son/brother passed away at the age of 3. The little boy was a pistol who was full of life, energy and determination. I have prayed for the family and remembered this little boy through the new seasons of life. I had a choice to press on or turn around. I chose to press on, was it the whisper of God that nudged me to press on? Had I given into the fatigue, heat and desire to quit I would’ve missed seeing those faces. What am I doing here? I was going for a run, God was whispering.

Set a timer for two minutes and listen to God. What is He whispering to you today?
