Hunger for God: Prayers from the Psalms

I have been praying for God to help me “hunger and thirst for righteousness” (Matthew 5:6). One of the ways God has been leading me to hunger for more of Him is by praying through the Psalms. I recently opened an old Bible that I used when I was first married and found several highlighted verses. I have been using these verses as prayers and wanted to share a few with you.

Psalm 42:1-2

As the deer pants for water, so I long for you, O God. I thirst for God, the living God. Where can I find him to come and stand before him?

Prayer: Heavenly Father, just as the deer longs for water, may my soul long for You. Help me to find and stand before You, feeling Your presence in every moment of my life.

Psalm 51:10

Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.

Prayer: God, I ask You to cleanse my heart and renew my spirit. Give me purity in my thoughts and actions, and make me strong in my faith and dedication to You.

Psalm 51:12

Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.

Prayer: Father, fill me with the joy of Your salvation. Give me a willing and obedient spirit that is sustained by Your love and grace, keeping me close to You always.

Psalm 62:5

Find rest, O my soul, in God alone; my hope comes from him.

Prayer: God, help me to find my rest in You alone. Let my hope be anchored in Your promises, and may my soul find peace in Your presence.

Psalm 63:1

O God, you are my God, earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you, my body longs for you, in a dry and weary land where there is no water.

Prayer: God, I want more of You. In this dry and weary world, let my soul thirst for You alone. Satisfy my longing for Your presence and fill me with Your life-giving Spirit.

Psalm 86:11

Teach me your way, O LORD, and I will walk in your truth; give me an undivided heart, that I may fear your name.

Prayer: Teach me Your ways and guide me in Your truth. Give me an undivided heart, so I may honor You in all that I do.

Psalm 97:12

Rejoice in the LORD, you who are righteous, and praise his holy name.

Prayer: God, I rejoice in You and Your righteousness. May my life be a constant praise to Your name, celebrating Your goodness and love each day.

Psalm 119:20

My soul is consumed with longing for your laws at all times.

Prayer: Father, let my soul be consumed with a longing for Your Word. Help me to live by Your laws, finding wisdom and guidance in them.

Psalm 143:10

Teach me to do your will, for you are my God; may your good Spirit lead me on level ground.

Prayer: God, guide me to do Your will and lead me by Your Spirit. Let me walk on level ground, following Your path with faith and trust in Your perfect plans.

Psalm 145:17-18

The LORD is righteous in all his ways and loving toward all he has made. The LORD is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth.

Prayer: Dear God, I praise You for Your righteousness and love. Thank You for being near to all who call on You in truth. Help me to call on You and experience Your closeness today.

Invitation to Pray Through the Psalms

If you would like to have your own adventure praying through the Psalms, start by reading a Psalm each day. After you read one, look for a verse or two that sticks out to you and write a prayer in your own words. May these prayers guide you to a deeper relationship with God, as you hunger and thirst for His righteousness in your life.
