Week two of marathon training had me up and running before 6:00 most mornings. We’ve had a busy schedule with family get-togethers, t-ball and softball, 6 days of running, 2 days of strength training, 40 miles total.

Well, remember how I was excited to keep the same pace range as last week and just up my distance? Apparently I put too much effort into my runs and my coach decided I could have a faster “easy” pace. My 6 mile “easy” run today was hot, humid and hilly, all the H’s! If you see me out on a run and my face looks like I’m in pain, don’t worry it’s just an “easy” run. I do this for fun.

Another “easy” run. The rest of my day was “easy” with it being the 4th of July. I've been revisiting a favorite devotional, Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World. Life has been going full speed with packed schedules, extremely early mornings and I need reminder to sit rather than be on the run at all times.

The irony of hills. The last two days I’ve been at our camper where hills abound! Today on the other hand I’m at our house and the nearest hill is 2 ½ miles away! An early morning bike ride to get in 6 x 30 seconds hill sprints and then another bike ride home. This time I put full effort into all 6 hill sprints, unlike last week when I was a little sluggish on the first one.

I woke up to an email from my coach:
“Nice job today on the hills.”
My hamstring has been sore with the hills and speed. I’ve been taking out all of my recovery tools: massage gun, lacrosse ball, massage stick, foam roller and KT tape. I also had a new pair of shoes arrive. The difference between an old and new pair of shoes is like night and day! By the time I hit 300 miles on a pair of shoes I like to have a replacement to work in and downgrade my old shoes to short runs only for a few more miles until they are officially retired. To save money I buy an older version of my favorite shoe, Asics Gel Kayano. I went to a running store when I first started running and this is the shoe that felt best to me.

All about speed. I did a longer warm up with a variety of drills and then set out for Fartleks (playing with speed). I ran at what felt like my one mile pace 3 times and then 3 more times. After I got home I realized that I can’t count to 6, I only did 5 of my assigned repeats.

Early morning long run. Alarm set for 4:30, out the door by 5:30, threw caramel rolls in the oven as soon as I got home, stretched and showered. We have family up for the weekend and I have a reunion with my college friends. Thankfully tomorrow is a rest day, no running and lots of bumming! I’m trying not to think about the challenging runs on the schedule for next week.
