“Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope.” — Romans 5:3-4
Have you ever noticed how suffering through a trial never feels good in the
moment? But when you come out the other side, gratitude overflows. My daughter’s volleyball team has been learning this lesson firsthand through a season filled with losses. They’ve been working hard, sharpening their skills, yet it seems when they finally master their serves, they struggle with the bump-set-spike. And just as they get into a rhythm with their bump-set-spike, they suddenly forget how to serve. It’s been a season marked by frustration and growth.
Near our camper, there’s a huge hill I like to run. I once met a woman there and commented that the best part of conquering that hill is the downhill that follows. But there’s an added bonus—the hill builds strength. It strengthens my legs and lungs, much like how the trials we face strengthen our character.
In the same way, my daughter’s team felt overwhelming joy when they finally secured their first win of the season. Through their losses, they’ve been building something more valuable than wins—they’ve been learning to work together, support each other, and persevere.
In life, when we face trials of all kinds, there’s great joy in reaching the end, but there are also unexpected blessings along the way. Our character is being refined, and that’s something to be thankful for—even before the victory.
Challenge: This week, think of a trial you're currently facing or one you’ve overcome in the past. How did or how could this experience build your strength or character? Write it down, and take a moment to thank God for the growth He’s bringing through it.
